How copying improves your music productions?
First of all, I don’t mean you should copy the melodies and chords of existing music productions. Or make a 1:1 copy of someone else track. Of course it can be helpful if you are in a learning process but you should never release it .
What if my music productions sounds similar?
It is not really problem. There are so many combinations of notes and chords. But if it happens and somebody find out they can sue you.
I still think that copying is super important to all forms of art when someone starts. I mean when you copy it, change it, adapt it. This is how humans evolve basically so it’s a normal behavior. But it’s all about practice. I would never advise to release a song what you copied from someone else.
When you try to learn to create electronic music productions it’s actually very important to listen to other people’s tracks. Try to copy them if you are into – for example – Don Diablo’s music, then just take one of his track. Drag it into your DAW, analyze it, listen to a couple of times in depth and then try to recreate it. Maybe you will end up with something else, maybe similar or even maybe better. Maybe you will be the next future house superstar?! The DAW itself does not really matter, it can be anything by your preferences (Logic, Ableton or FL Studio just to mention the popular ones). It’s just a tool.
It’s a great technique to learn how the professionals doing their buildups. Also you will learn a lot of skills meantime you try to remake the sounds you heard in the reference track.
You can also have more tracks at the same time that you can inspired by. For example you can use one track you you like how the groove built up. Another one how the chords are played and one how the uprising part made. After all you just combine these into something new and I think it’s a great technique do develop your skills as a ghost producer.
If you are a beginner and just open up your DAW and try to make something, you probably will be lost. Especially at the beginning. You also have to learning to other people’s tracks. Analyze them elements by elements as careful as possible. This is probably the best method to teach yourself as a music producer.
In my opinion copying music productions is totally fine when it happens for learning purposes
I guarantee you that those people that you are copying once in their career copied someone else too.
On the other hand if someones just tells you that your songs just sounds like a copy of another track just take it as a compliment. That means you are close enough to it. That’s the point where you learned the technical part of music productions and you can start developing your own sound.
You can start getting inspired by different kinds of music and try to combine them together.
