In the past years the music market has been changed dramatically. Physical sales goes deep down, and streaming services like Spotify rules the scene.
So It was about time to set new measurements for charts too.
Billboard, the most influental factor in the industry will change the whole scene if the rumors are true.
Although Billboard’s “hot 100 singles” chart already based on YouTube views, this big step what they prepare could be an impact.
From our point of view, this change could be really forward thinking, if it will be executed wisely.
We really hope that they have clue how YouTube works. Well, of course they have, but I mean about the social buying systems, where you can actually buy views from companies. Yes, it’s also a taboo like ghost producing, but it’s real. But compared with our work, it’s absolutely destructive because it makes false popularity. That can modify the charts and the whole idea turning into a big mistake.
Also don’t forget the fact that YouTube always try to offer you contents which are related by your previous actions, views. So all based on cookies. It’s also great, but if you don’t really invest time to search and just “eat what they are giving you”, then you will miss some precious release by paid influencers. Of course YouTube advertisers can form your taste with controlled, paid featured videos.
As it’s clearly visible, there are many facts which can be critical.
All in all, we are on the same site as Top Dawg Entertainment’s CEO, Anthony Tiffith, who said “One million albums sold is platinum. (…) No cheat codes [to] platinum.” – He sums it up pretty well in our opinion.
We can’t wait to see what the future brings for us. This could be a game changer thing when it comes to implementation.
